It's not uncommon for children to face challenges as they learn to read—but persistent difficulties with decoding, spelling, fluency, or comprehension can be signs that your child needs more structured support. You may have noticed your child avoiding reading, guessing at words, mixing up sounds, or falling behind their peers. These struggles can affect not only academic success, but also confidence and motivation.
As a parent, it’s natural to want answers and effective solutions. Seeking out a tutor trained in research-based methods like Orton-Gillingham can make a significant difference. With the right instruction, your child can build the skills and confidence needed to become a capable, lifelong reader.

My name is Liisa McInnis, and I am a Certified Ontario Teacher with over 22 years of experience in elementary education. I’ve spent 7 years delivering Empower Reading™, a research-based intervention developed by SickKids Hospital, and currently work as a Classroom Literacy Support Teacher focused on small group reading interventions. Now trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach, I offer personalized, evidence-based reading and spelling support for students who need targeted intervention to build strong literacy skills and confidence.
My training in the Orton Gillingham approach, ensures that I will deliver specialized, structured, and evidence-based literacy instruction that’s especially effective for students with reading difficulties, including those with dyslexia. I offer a detailed pre-assessment to determine the scope and sequence of individualized sessions, and work with the family to support and foster reading and spelling development beyond the sessions.
